Hey there.

Be Humble

September 21 | Discipleship Guide

Be Real Together:

Take a few minutes to catch up, tell stories, and laugh together. Trust and friendship take time to build. If you’re launching a new DG, one person should tell their story — what do we need to know about you? Next week, have another person in your DG share their story.

Read Together: Matthew 18:1–5 CSB

The disciples wanted to know who was the greatest in God’s kingdom, but Jesus flipped their question upside down. He brought a child into the circle and said that unless they turned and became like children—dependent, teachable, and trusting—they wouldn’t even enter the kingdom. True greatness in God’s kingdom isn’t about status, ego, or rivalry—it’s about humility. To be humble is to think of ourselves less, welcome others more, and depend on God like children who know they need His care.

The One Question:
Ask this question at your family meal or Discipleship Group.

When you hear the word humility, what comes to mind? Share an example of a time when you experienced true humility in yourself or saw it in someone else.

Grow Together:
Use these questions to go deeper with your DG or for personal study.

  1. Humility Within Ourselves
    • Tim Keller says humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. What does this look like in practice for you?
  2. Humility Toward Others
    • Jesus said welcoming others—even those overlooked by society—is like welcoming Him. How can we be more intentional in showing hospitality to people outside our comfort zones?
  3. Humility Before God
    • Jesus said we must become like children to enter the kingdom. How can dependence, teachability, and simplicity shape your walk with God this season?

Pray Together:

  • Thank God for sending Jesus, who humbled Himself for our sake.
  • Confess the areas where pride, comparison, or ego have gotten in the way.
  • Ask the Spirit to grow in you a childlike posture of dependence and teachability.
  • Pray for our church family to be marked by humility in how we love God, love one another, and welcome those far from Him.

Next Steps:

  • This week, take one intentional step of humility:
    • Choose to serve someone without recognition.
    • Invite someone new into your home, group, or circle of friends.
    • Spend time in prayer asking God to quiet your soul like Psalm 131 describes.
