Hey there.

The Best-Worst Sermon Ever Preached

June 29 | Discipleship Guide

Be Real Together:

Take a few minutes to catch up, tell stories, and laugh together. Trust and friendship take time to build. If you’re launching a new DG, one person should tell their story — what do we need to know about you? Next week, have another person in your DG share their story.

Read Together: JONAH 3 CSB

Jonah finally delivers God’s message to Nineveh. His sermon is short and blunt—yet incredibly effective. The people believe, repent, and God relents. Jonah’s obedience wasn’t perfect, but God still used it powerfully. This story reminds us that God doesn’t need polished heroes—He works through imperfect people who simply say yes.

The One Question:
Ask this question at your family meal or Discipleship Group.

Where might God be asking you to obey—even if it’s uncomfortable or you don’t feel ready?

Grow Together:
Use these questions to go deeper with your DG or for personal study.

  1. God’s Word Comes Again:
    • Jonah receives the same call a second time. What does this reveal about God's persistence and grace? Is there anything God might be calling you back to?
  2. You Don’t Have to Be a Hero:
    • Jonah was obedient but still flawed. How does that encourage you in your walk with Jesus? Where do you feel pressure to be perfect before you step out?
  3. Obedience Over Outcome:
    • Jonah’s message wasn’t polished, but it was faithful—and God used it. How can you shift from focusing on results to simply saying “yes” to what God asks?
  4. Repentance Is Powerful:
    • The people of Nineveh respond wholeheartedly to Jonah’s warning. What would true repentance look like in your life—or your community—right now?
  5. God’s Mercy Triumphs:
    • God relents when the people turn from their evil ways. How does this shape your view of God’s character? Where do you need to be reminded of His mercy today?

Pray Together:

Take time to pray with and for each other.

Suggested Prayer Prompts:
  • Thank God for His mercy and second chances.
  • Confess areas where you’ve hesitated or resisted His call.
  • Ask for boldness to be obedient, even when you feel weak or unqualified.
  • Pray for your city—that repentance and renewal would come through the power of the gospel.

Next Steps:

This week, take one step of obedience that you’ve been avoiding.
  • Share the hope of Jesus with someone.
  • Revisit a call you’ve resisted—big or small.
  • Reflect on Jonah 3 and journal a prayer of surrender.

If you’ve never been baptized, consider signing up for our August 3 “Church At The River” baptism and declare you belong to Jesus.
