Marriage, Divorce, and Singleness
October 19 | Discipleship Guide
Be Real Together:
Take a few minutes to catch up, tell stories, and laugh together. Trust and friendship take time to build. If you’re launching a new DG, one person should tell their story — what do we need to know about you? Next week, have another person in your DG share their story.
Read Together: Matthew 19:1-12 CSB
This week, Pastor Sean unpacked one of Jesus’ hardest teachings—His words on marriage, divorce, and singleness. The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus in a debate about divorce, but He redirected them to God’s original design for marriage: covenant, faithfulness, and unity. Jesus reminds us that what God joins together, no one should separate. Yet He also acknowledges the pain of our brokenness and offers grace to all—married, divorced, and single alike. In God’s kingdom, singleness is honored, marriage is sacred, and all are called to holiness and wholehearted devotion to Christ.
The One Question:
Ask this question at your family meal or Discipleship Group.
What does it look like for you to honor God in your current season—whether single, married, or divorced?
Grow Together:
Use these questions to go deeper with your DG or for personal study.
- What part of Jesus' teaching in this passage challenged you the most?
- Jesus points back to creation, saying, “but it was not like that from the beginning” (v.8). What does this tell us about God’s original intent for marriage and commitment?
- Jesus explains that divorce was permitted “because of your hardness of heart” (v.8). What do you think that means? Where do you see hardness of heart showing up in relationships today—and how can Jesus soften it?
- Jesus honors those who choose singleness “because of the kingdom of heaven” (v.12). How can this perspective shape the way we view singleness—not as a lesser path, but as a way of serving God wholeheartedly?
- What does it look like to reflect God’s faithfulness in our relationships—whether married, single, dating, or divorced? How can we live out Jesus’ words with both grace and truth?
Pray Together:
- Thank God for His faithfulness, even when we fall short.
- Pray for marriages in your community to reflect Christ’s covenant love.
- Lift up those who are divorced or single, asking God to bring healing, hope, and purpose.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to help each of you honor God in your season and walk in purity, grace, and truth.
