Hey there.

TRUE WEALTH

October 26 | Discipleship Guide

Be Real Together:

Take a few minutes to catch up, tell stories, and laugh together. Trust and friendship take time to build. If you’re launching a new DG, one person should tell their story — what do we need to know about you? Next week, have another person in your DG share their story.

Read Together: Matthew 19:16-30 CSB

In this passage, a rich young man approaches Jesus asking what he must do to gain eternal life. We see that he has kept the 6 others-focused commandments, but Jesus intentionally leaves out the 4 God-focused commandments. He exposes the one thing he’s unwilling to surrender to God—his wealth—the idol that has a grip on his heart. The story reminds us that the invitation to follow Jesus always costs something, but what we gain in Him far outweighs what we give up. “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

The One Question:
Ask this question at your family meal or Discipleship Group.

What’s one area of your life that might be holding you back from fully following Jesus?

Grow Together:
Use these questions to go deeper with your DG or for personal study.

  1. The rich young ruler asked, “What good must I do?” What does this reveal about how we often approach faith? How does Jesus shift that perspective?
  2. Jesus told the man to sell his possessions and follow Him. What might “wealth” represent in your life—something good that’s become a barrier to trust or surrender?
  3. Jesus says, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Where do you need to rely on God’s power rather than your own effort right now?
  4. Peter asked, “What will there be for us?” How does Jesus’ promise of eternal reward help us stay faithful when obedience feels costly in the present?
  5. Jesus redefines wealth as life in God’s kingdom. How can you practically live this out—viewing generosity, success, or comfort through the lens of eternity?

Pray Together:

  • Thank God for His patience and generosity toward us.
  • Ask Him to reveal anything you might be clinging to that hinders your obedience.
  • Pray for courage to release control and trust God’s provision.
  • Thank Him for the promise that life with Him is far richer than anything we could gain on our own.

Next Steps:

Choose one tangible way to respond this week. Here's a few ideas:
  • Spend time in prayer asking, “Jesus, what are You asking me to let go of?”
  • Ask a trusted friend or mentor: “What do you see in me that I might be holding too tightly?”
  • Choose a spiritual practice (fasting, silence, Sabbath) that helps loosen your grip on temporary things.
