Hey there.

I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD

June 14 | Discipleship Guide

Be Real Together:

Take a few minutes to catch up, tell stories, and laugh together.
If you’re launching a new Group, trust and friendship take time to build. Take turns each week having someone share a bit of their story.

Read Together: John 10:1-18 CSB

In this passage, Jesus reveals Himself as the Good Shepherd. Unlike selfish leaders who use people for their own gain, Jesus knows His sheep, cares for them, protects them, and leads them toward life. His sheep hear His voice, know His voice, and follow His voice. Most importantly, Jesus is the Shepherd who willingly lays down His life for His sheep and then takes it up again through His resurrection. Because of who He is and what He has done, we can trust Him to lead us, protect us, and guide us home.

The One Question:
If you only have time for one question, ask this one.

Jesus says His sheep hear His voice, know His voice, and follow His voice. Which of those three feels easiest for you? Which feels most challenging?

Grow Together:
Use these questions to go deeper with your Group or for personal reflection.

  1. What stands out to you most in this passage?
  2. Jesus says His sheep will not follow a stranger's voice. Why do you think learning to recognize Jesus' voice is so important in our current cultural moment?
  3. Pastor Sean pointed out that we are all being discipled by countless voices every day—social media, podcasts, news, friends, and culture. If you're honest, what voices most influence your thinking right now?
  4. Jesus contrasts the hired hand and the Good Shepherd. What differences do you notice between them?
  5. The sermon described the Good Shepherd as not merely morally good, but beautiful, lovely, and trustworthy in the way He leads. How has Jesus demonstrated His goodness in your life?
  6. Take a moment to read Psalm 23 out loud as a Group. Which picture of the Shepherd in Psalm 23 resonates most with your current season and why?
  7. What would it look like for you to more intentionally hear, know, and follow the voice of Jesus this week?

Pray Together:

  • Thank Jesus for being the Good Shepherd who knows you personally and cares for you deeply.
  • Thank Him for willingly laying down His life for you and rising again in victory.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to help you recognize the voice of Jesus above all competing voices.
  • Pray for discernment to reject voices that pull you away from Christ.
  • Ask God to increase your trust in His leadership, protection, and guidance.
  • Pray that your Group would become a community that follows Jesus faithfully together.

Next Steps:

  • Practice listening: Spend five minutes each day this week in silence, asking, "Jesus, what do You want me to know today?"
  • Read Psalm 23 daily: Reflect on one characteristic of the Shepherd each day and thank God for it.
  • Reduce the noise: Identify one voice or source that consistently distracts you from Jesus and take a break from it this week.
  • Pay attention to prompts: Notice moments of conviction, encouragement, or guidance from the Holy Spirit and respond in obedience.
  • Talk with another believer: Ask someone how they've learned to recognize God's voice in their own life.
  • Trust the Shepherd: Identify one area where you've been trying to lead yourself and intentionally surrender it to Jesus.
