Hey there.

Like a Wedding Banquet

October 18 | Discipleship Guide

Be Real Together:

Take a few minutes to catch up, tell stories, and laugh together.
If you’re launching a new Group, trust and friendship take time to build. Take turns each week having someone share a bit of their story.

Read Together: Matthew 22:1–14 CSB

Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a king who prepares a wedding banquet for his son. When the invited guests reject the invitation, the king sends his servants to invite everyone they can find, and the banquet is filled. But the parable ends with a sobering warning: being invited is not the same as responding rightly. Jesus calls us to receive God’s invitation with joy and gratitude, remain humble in our faith, and prepare our hearts to know and enjoy Him.

The One Question:
If you only have time for one question, ask this one.

How are you responding to God’s invitation to know Him and enjoy Him— with joyful gratitude, indifference, or pride?

Grow Together:
Use these questions to go deeper with your Group or for personal reflection.

  1. What stands out to you most in this passage? What surprises you about the story Jesus tells?
  2. Why do you think the first guests refused the king’s invitation? What do their responses reveal about their priorities?
  3. The king sends his servants out again and invites everyone they can find. What does this reveal about God’s desire to bring people into His Kingdom?
  4. Pastor Josh described us as people who have been invited in and “grafted in” through faith in Jesus. How does recognizing that we didn’t earn our place in God’s family shape the way we relate to Him?
  5. The sermon warns us not to become proud or arrogant about our place in God’s Kingdom. What can spiritual pride look like in everyday life, even for people who have been in church for a long time?
  6. In verses 11–14, Jesus shifts from the generosity of the invitation to the importance of being ready for the banquet. What do you think it looks like to receive God’s invitation genuinely, rather than simply assuming we are secure because we identify as Christians?
  7. The sermon calls us to continue in the way of Jesus, guard our hearts, and enter the feast with joyful gladness. Which of these do you most need to pay attention to in this season, and why?

Pray Together:

  • Thank God for His kindness and for inviting us into His Kingdom through Jesus.
  • Ask God to reveal any areas where pride, entitlement, or indifference have crept into your faith.
  • Pray for a genuine desire to know God, follow Jesus, and enjoy His presence.
  • Pray for people in your life who have not yet responded to Jesus’ invitation.

Next Steps:

  • Receive the invitation with gratitude. Spend time this week thanking God for the grace that has brought you into His family.
  • Check your heart. Identify one area where pride, entitlement, or spiritual complacency may be affecting your relationship with God. Take a practical step toward humility and repentance.
  • Make room for someone else. Invite someone into a meal, a conversation, or a community where they can experience the welcome of Jesus.
  • Continue in the way of Jesus. Choose one concrete step of obedience this week as a response to His invitation.
